Story

I had a friend who constantly compared New York (unfavorably) to other places he'd lived.  New York was so expensive, it was so hard to make friends, life had been so much easier in the other places.  It was clear he was living in the past, nostalgic for a time and place that was long gone, and I got tired of hearing about it.

Lyrics

Don’t want to hear ‘bout Colorado

About the Rockies & the pines

You liked ‘em better in the rearview

But now they’re all that’s on your mind, so...

Get on back to Colorado

Get on back, clean up your mess

Get on back, remake the movie of your life

But they tore the set down when you left.

Don’t want to hear ‘bout Austin, Texas

And all the ladies that you knew

‘Cause I can feel them all around us

When I want to be alone with you, so...

Get on back to Austin Texas

Get on back, clean up your mess

Get on back, remake the movie of your life

But they tore the set down when you left.

Well, I love my New York City, but if you don’t

I truly understand.

I’ll help you load the truck, I’ll even pack your lunch.

Go west young man!

Don’t want to hear about that year in LA,

The endless summer turned you brown

You say the winters here are killers

Well babe, that’s why the birds don’t stick around, so...

Get on back to California

Get on back, clean up your mess

Get on back, remake the movie of your life

But they tore the set down, they tore the set down when you left.

Story

When I was single I'd watch the happy couples in the bars where I played and wish I could be like them.  I wrote this song about a couple of regulars who, as it turned out, were not a couple but just very good friends.  It still made for a good story.

Lyrics

Cosmo and Manhattan come in here every Sunday and they

slide into their usual seats.

Spent the day out shopping, now it’s time for stopping for a

cold one and a visit with me.

So happy to be here, so happy to feel this way

So happy that it’s Cosmo and Manhattan day.

Cosmo and Manhattan look kind of like each other, well they

say that happens after a while.

Toasting with their glasses, I’m sure they have their problems but you’d

never know it seeing them smile.

So happy to be here, so happy to feel this way

So happy that it’s Cosmo and Manhattan day.

We’re part of a scene, we live in a dream

It’s a world everyone’s alright with.

As I walk home alone, wish for one of my own

to share some early nights with, just like...

Cosmo and Manhattan are looking at their watches, and

Manhattan draws a check in the air.

Bracing for the subway, a much too early Monday

But when Sunday comes again they’ll be there

So happy to be here, so happy to feel this way

So happy that it’s Cosmo and Manhattan day.

Story

A look into celebrity-worship.

Lyrics

They keep her picture, they look into her

They write her letters as if they knew her

They take posession, their little darling

Love her best when they see her falling

Mouths  flapping, shutters snapping as they follow her downtown

And what they say is...

Here comes my Beautiful Loser

Here comes my Beautiful Loser

Here comes my Beautiful Loser now

The lifestyles of the rich and tawdry

They’d sell their soul to go through her laundry

They’re fascinated by who she married

But don’t believe it’s his kid she carried

Outside the church they wait, to soil her gown

And what they say is...

Here comes my Beautiful Loser

Here comes my Beautiful Loser

Here comes my Beautiful Loser now

People gather ‘round, celebrating trash

Swallowing the medicine and coughing up the cash

The magic moments, the human drama

The Queen of England, the Dalai Lama

The Riviera, the slopes at Aspen

Here they come out of breath and gasping

They’ll be at the bottom of the hill when she comes tumbling down

And what they’ll say is...

Here comes my Beautiful Loser

Here comes my Beautiful Loser

Here comes my Beautiful Loser now

Story

A look at love from different angles.

Lyrics

You’re opium, you’re platinum, you’re oxygen to me

You’re opium, you’re platinum, you’re oxygen to me

I’m lost in a daydream, on a cloud of pink and gold

A magic carpet to elevate my soul

My head is spinning and I’m grinning like a clown

All I can say is that I’m never coming down

You’re opium, you’re platinum, you’re oxygen to me

You’re opium, you’re platinum, you’re oxygen to me

My love, you’re priceless, the finest thing on earth

Rare gems and spices could never match your worth

You sparkle in the sunlight and you glitter in my hands

You’ve given me a fortune and I hope you understand

You’re opium, you’re platinum, you’re oxygen to me

You’re opium, you’re platinum, you’re oxygen to me

Can’t live without you, all night I breathe you in

My life’s about you, you’re underneath my skin

Feel you around me even when you aren’t there

So glad you found me, you’re a breath of fresh air

You’re opium, you’re platinum, you’re oxygen to me

You’re opium, you’re platinum, you’re oxygen to me

You’re opium

You’re platinum

You’re oxygen to me
